Finally! The long winter was over, spring is finishing up and the first race of the season was here!!
I was geard up and ready to go, we left the house around 8 a.m. and met up with my good freind and fellow OSCA racer Tony Xynos. Tony runs an awsome 1978 Skylark in EZ Street. After stopping on the way for a quick bite to eat, we arrived at the track around 10:30 a.m. and parked in our usual spot - by the fence on the south side of the staging lanes. Took the car off the trailer, got set up and went to tech the car. We had 35 minutes until the lanes would be closed and first round qualifying would begin so I figured if I wanted to get a baseline, I'd better go for a pass. How about an 11.91 right off the trailer without touching a thing!! I was pleased, to say the least - the car is running right where I want it. Two qualifiers and then first round eliminations were to come. In my first round qualifier I was up against a new competitor in my class, a 360 ci. 1964 Plymouth Cuda. We lined up and I left first. I was out in front of him by enough of a margin that I could lift and still get there before him so that's what I did and clicked off a 12.17 which would turn out to be my only good qualifyer. I ended up running under in my second qualifier, an 11.93, which didn't do anything to improve my position. 5:00 p.m. Time for first round eliminations. My opponent, a black Mustang that qualified with a 12.05 putting him in the number three position. Lane choice was his and he picked the right lane. We staged the cars and I left first gaining a quick advantage. I was in front of him the entire length of the track, until I made a mental error - I lifted way too early out of fear of running under. I did the same thing as in one of my races last year, I focused too much on the other car and driver and forgot to run my race. Needless to say, he drove around me for the easy victory with a 12.22 to my really stupid 12.44. We'll have to try again next race
